DISCUSSION POST
I have adapted my teaching philosophy to my current perspectives acquired from the principles and practices explained in this course. In short, I have included the aspect of relationships as a core learning experience. I will foster the learners’ ability to construct knowledge relevant to their social context. The most fundamental principles are trust and independence. The core enthusiasm is to constantly recognize and acknowledge the unique and diverse needs of the learners.
Primarily, there is a shift in focus from Constructivist Learning Theory to social constructivist learning theory. This explains a change in my teaching goal from promoting the engagement of learners to fostering relationships with teachers and peers. To attain this goal, I have sought to adjust my classroom to active assessment of the dynamic student needs. One way is to leverage the use of technology, including online platforms, for engaging discussions and timely feedback. In addition to promoting learners to construct knowledge, I emphasize more in holistic learning. Initially, my focus was to promote engagement and active learning, but I will integrate trust and independence. From the practices and principles acquired, I believe learners are interested in approaching learning as a collaborative venture. I have to cultivate a genuine concern to listen to their views and opinions within the context of their culture. Learners need to be confident; I will fairly address their concerns. I no longer want to assume that I have total control of the inquiry.
Teaching is more than knowing, and teaching is more than telling. My classroom also includes acknowledging and respecting the independence of the learners, individually and in groups.
The rationale for adjustments from engagement to include relationships is a need to promote an environment where learners authentically express their views. To construct knowledge, my role is to enhance a proactive account of cultural norms, personal views and past experiences. However, I maintain engagement as the most significant learning experience in my classroom.
