Introduction
Vietnam and Asia have been carrying out a trade for cat meat, and It becomes hard to believe that the cat meat trade has been and is real in the two localities. The community cats and pets in Vietnam and Asia are caught and tortured. They are killed for the sole reason of selling the meat to the people who consume it, especially several Asia parts. The trade is very alarming as it seems strange that most people ought not to happen as expected. In the reported news, the cat meat markets are reported to be flourishing in Vietnam. The restaurants found in the area include the cats in the menu they offer to their customers.
Millions of cats are trafficked, butchered, and consumed in Vietnam every year. Most households own pets and cats as Vietnams value them so much. It then happens for the cats and pets so unfortunate that they are captured while on the streets due to the increasing demand day in day out. The same applies to the cats found in the gardens as they are caught too for the mere reason of meeting the country’s demand. As a result, the cats’ owners live in fear of their beloved cats and pets being captured by the traders of cat meat who carry out the selling of the cat meat while hiding.
The Alley Cat Allies have a stance that is very firm towards the trade of cat meat. It is very horrifying to steal, slaughter, consume, and sell cats to the locally available market. The most threatening issue is that cat meat consumption ends up placing humans at risk of contracting some zoonotic diseases.
A world animal welfare organization named FOUR PAWS and a change for animals foundation have presented an investigative report showing that more than one million cats are stolen each year from their families or abducted from the outdoor homes. The cats are sold to an extensive network of restaurants and slaughterhouses in Vietnam. After the cats are captured, they are subjected to more cruelty and in terrible conditions. They are put together in filthy, cramped cages and trafficked over long distances with no food and water for several days. Most cats pass away due to stress, tiredness, dehydration, or heat stroke on their long journeys. The cats who make it to the destinations are drowned or beaten until they die, only to be prepared for a menu known as “thịt mèo” which means a little tiger. Most cats possess collars on the date they were killed, proving the value they have on being companions and that they were ripped and stolen from the people in love with them.
The act of abducting cats and killing them to sell and eat them was banned by the law in Vietnam in January 2020 but revoked by the government of Vietnam, which left the cats and the families they belong to being vulnerable to the cruel and awful trade increasingly done all over the country.
There is a great need to support the cats found in Vietnam, together with the people who care for them. This should be achieved by exposing the issue and calling the Vietnam government to reinstate its law that prevents the cat meat trade in the country. The expectation is to see the Vietnam cat advocates and the advocates worldwide taking action soon by signing a pledge that requires a person to join the Alley Cat Allies and the people condemning the trap, sell, torment, and killing cats for their human consumption. It is believed that as unified people, the government across the globe will be called to make changes in saving lives by protecting animals that are under their stewardship.
