Effective Listening is more important than talking.

Effective Listening is a skill of actively taking in the information given to you by a speaker as proof of Listening and interest for the sake of giving feedback to show that you were listening. To listen effectively, one should be attentive, use nonverbal cues, maintain eye contact, nod your head in agreement to a certain point and sit upright; a listener should use receptive language; for instance, use yes for a statement one agrees on. A good listener also asks for clarity on points not well understood.

Likewise, for good communication skills, one must be a good speaker, for example, to bring your point home to your audience effectively. A good speaker is one that connects with his or her audience seamlessly. Good speaking is made effective with skills like using relatable examples that your listeners will find interesting, using body language like maybe raising your eyebrows to signify surprise (Ahmadi, 2016). And a broad smile to show happiness will keep your audience glued. Importantly a good speaker must be a good listener to deliver his message to his audience effectively.

For effective communication, one needs to listen and understand the other person and be a good speaker to not use wrong words on the wrong occasions. Communication must be a two-way road; there must be Listening and responder. Without the other, communication will be pointless, and it will not be effective, hence the need to have all the listening and talking skills.

Listening skills will aid in a good understanding of the subject matter. Good Listening will help reduce time wastage on stupid talks; these skills will help reduce errors and distractions. Good Listening helps in better understanding through the observation of body language; this skill helps a listener critically assess the point being communicated by choice of words of the speaker; good listening skills in communication will achieve harmony, bringing the two parties to a consensus is empathetic.  A good listener also motivates the speaker to even pour his heart to him more.

A good speaking skill helps in building up the speaker’s self-efficacy. With good speaking skills, the speaker will be confident in their ability to deliver and knows he can connect with his audience easily. Good communication skills help the speaker more than its importance to the audience. None the less a good speaker who is not a good listener will be a distraction, and his eloquence will be foolishness to the audience.

From the above argument, a good listener can still communicate without talking while a good speaker cannot be good if they cannot listen and understand. Hence it’s key for a good speaker to be a good listener to avoid preconceptions and false talks. oneThis brings us to the conclusion that good listening skills are better than good speaking skills. It is pointless to be a good speaker who has no information and is not good at listening and absorbing instructions. It will be boring for your audience since you cannot understand them.
