Robbery
In modern society, the culture has been eroded with bad thinking where people, mostly youths, engage themselves with criminal activities that are unlawful and illegal. Most youths engage themselves in criminal activities like robbery, which is the crime of attempting to take or take other people’s property either by the threat of force, by f0orce, or by making the victim fear. The law clearly defines robbery as an offense, and one can be sentenced to imprisonment or sentenced to life imprisonment or sentenced to death depending on what the law states off a certain country. There is a classification of robbery into several types depending on the activity that one has done.
Types of robbery.
Robbery can be classified into different categories according to which an individual has done and considered as robbery. Different types of robbery include; robbery through threat or force. It is often difficult to differentiate between robbery and theft; both involve taking people’s property, but the crime of theft uses force while robbery involves force while taking the property. The other type of robbery is street robbery, mostly done on the roads or in the public streets with a weapon. Street robbery can be classified as armed robbery as there is a weapon, and force or threat is applied. There is also Carjacking, which involves the use of force when stealing a car from somebody. Lastly, there is aggravated robbery where someone brings weapons that look deadly or bring deadly weapons when stealing someone’s property to create fear for them to surrender easily (Piaskoski, 2019).
Reasons why people engage in robbery.
Previous statistics on robbery cases have shown that more people involved in criminal activities, more so robbery are youths of the bracket of between 18 to 35years of age. Youths engage in robbery due to some reasons, which include unemployment in-country (Aliu, 2020). When youths are unemployed, they tend to involve themselves in unlawful activities, giving them money and food. In most countries, youths lack education due to the poor education system, making them unable to secure a job in the job market. The youths’ usage of drugs has led them to engage in robbery and other negative activities relating to robbery. Idleness among youths leaves youths with no other options other than thinking evil and involving in robbery activities to find money, property, and food to sustain their lives. Peer pressure is another cause or a reason why most people have engaged in robbery offenses. Besides, all the robbers take advantage of inadequate security in an area to conduct the robbery activities.
Law provisions on robbery.
Law provides clear guidelines on rules and regulations in criminal activities and how the cases should be handled. These guidelines vary from country to country, and how the cases of robber should be handled differently in different countries. For example, the Common law of England states that; robbery is a criminal offense. And the person who commits the robbery crime shall be held guilty, and he/she will face the penalties. Section 8(2) of the 1968 Act says that the sentence for the person who is guilty of robbery could include legal punishment that is life imprisonment. The sentence should not be less than 20years in jail. In the case of men, they may be sentenced to whipping (Mudzingadutu, 2018). And if the offender is convicted of other offenses like grievous bodily harm and assault, may serve a long sentence in jail.
Individuals who have ever engaged in robbery.
Securities depot robbery is considered the biggest cash robbery globally, led by Lee Murray, a mixed art fighter. The robbery was done on 21 February 2006 in the evening until the morning hours the following day, 22 February 2000. The men involved in the robbery were armed in scorpions and guns (AK47s); they tied up some staff members and threatened the manager’s family. This helped them manage to steal over 92 million dollars in cash that belonged to England’s bank. Later after investigations were conducted, those involved in the robbery case and found guilty were arrested and sentenced to imprisonment.
Charles Wilson and Ronnie Biggs took part in the Great Train Robbery that led to a theft of 3.4 million American Dollars, which does not sound like a lot of money nowadays but did in those days in England in the year 1963. The robber was done with only a metal bar, and the theft story entered British history.
In conclusion, robbery is a common criminal offense that is often done in the modern world, be it robbery with violence or armed and with threats. Most of the cases of robbery encountered involve the youths who engage in it, intending to sustain their life with the money and property they get from such activities.
