The Brain Development Effects on the Behavior of Adolescents
The development of the brain affects the behavior of adolescents because of the developing prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex has the media prefrontal cortex in the middle of the mind, which is more active during adolescence (TEDGlobal, 2012). Therefore, due to the prefrontal cortex, an adolescent makes independent social decisions.
The Differing Brain Structures and Functions in Adolescents and Other Age Groups
The brain structures and functions are different in adolescents from other age groups because they have the limbic system with emotional processing capability. The limbic system gives adolescent higher risk-taking capabilities compared to adults (TEDGlobal, 2012). The adults tend to have lower risk-taking abilities.
The Two Interesting Things in the Video
The two things I found interesting in the video include the brain’s track development across the lifespan and social brain concept. The two reveal an exciting part of the brain development of human beings, which influences various emotional behaviors. The two concepts also explain why there are differences in the behaviors of adolescents and adults.
Agreeing or Disagreeing with Troxel’s Argument
I agree with Troxel’s argument that schools should start later for teens to ensure enough sleep. At times, teens experience sleep deprivation. Waking teens at very early hours to go to schools deprives them of enough sleep. Indeed, starting schools later ensures enough sleep for approximately 10 hours, as recommended by pediatricians (TEDxManhattanBeach, n.d.). Consequently, teens need enough sleep to avoid lasting effects on their brains and bodies.
Changes in Sleeping Habits over Time
My sleeping habits have changed over time because, at teenage, I slept for 15 hours while now, at adolescence, I sleep approximately 10 hours. Due to various responsibilities, sleeping habits change because of the time needed to execute them.
