Q1. In the article ‘A kinder gentler Immigration Policy,’ the authors state that ‘Americans “schizophrenic” in their feelings about illegal immigration’? What do you think of the author’s opinion and explain why? (10 marks)
The author in this extract may find it hard to intertwine sides. Still, indeed he is in the idea of legalizing the immigrants’ initial rights as the author states that Americans can develop schizophrenia when it comes to illegal migration. He mainly entails that these native Americans have both opinions based on these immigrants. He refers to them as two-sided people. One, they accept the terms of legalizing the illegal immigrants while on the other hand, they fight the unlawful of entering the Americans premises illegally.
It is right to say that America was formed as a result of immigration, but the folks who have occupied the territories have been adamant about making changes recently. The republican party is looking forward to legalizing illegal immigrants by giving them original citizenship. Americans are heavily investing in eradicating refugees by investing in borders up to a sum of about 40 billion dollars. In this context, the writer is mainly referring to the immigrant’s inhumanity that they are facing, and it is evident to side with him since we are all humans. Indeed, there should be no policy that could magically eradicate immigrants away from this country.
Q2. What do you think about the significance of ‘the Indus Waters Treaty’ as discussed in ‘Water Wars’? (10 marks)
The Indus organization or rivers is made up of three western rivers. Mainly, The Jhelum, the Indus, and the Chenab. It also consists of three eastern rivers. Mainly, Beas, Sutlej, and Ravi. According to this particular treaty against the water wars, the eastern rivers are used primarily to collect water for general uses, and it mainly involves Pakistan waters.
Contrary to this, Pakistan has also been involved with the western waters that are allowed to India after it passes through it. Mostly this treaty resulted in parting ways of countries by partitioning the water rather than utilizing this water fully to its purpose. This was brought up in article 4 of IWT states whereby it stated that any water used or initially developed out of the non-usage of these waters will result in underutilization f this water in other countries and thus will not be able to acquire the certain rights required in a couple of time heed ahead.
The significance of this treaty also helps in identifying the purpose given to the western rivers. The Indus, Chenab, and the Jhelum to Pakistan and those of the eastern rivers, the Ravi’s, Beas, and Sutlej. It gave out funding to allocate funds for building big tanks and linking canals and tube wells to other waters and dams. Numerous disputes were hence made as the people settled over the years through that treaty.
