Diversity in the workplace play a critical role in determining the success of a company or organization. when there is a diverse workforce in an organization, decision making process will be quick enabling the company to have a serious advantage over their competitors. It is important to note that companies with diverse workforce have the likelihood of achieving better business result and reaping more profit in comparison to their competitors that does not embrace diversity in their employees. it is crucial to understand the workforce diversity in the Hollywood film industry and actions that HR can take to improve the diversity in the company.

Hollywood is one of the leading entertainment industries across the world even though it is still struggling with issues concerning workforce diversity. Over the past decades, Hollywood has made no progress on screen representation because black women are still excluded from performing the leading role while men occupy more than twice of the roles during 2017 films (Hunt, Ana-Christina Ramon and Tran). Concerning the inclusion level, only 31.8% of character with dialogue were women and only 4 black women participated as leads during the 2017 films.

The Hollywood diversity report of 2017 shows some improvements, for instance, the minority actors had 11.4% lead roles on broadcasting indicating 3% increase compared to the results of 2016. The report also shows that number of the minority writers behind the scenes are increasing and the number of women taking leads in scripted broadcast and cable TV shows are steadily rising (Miranda). Hollywood is trying to reduce the gap of gender and racial parity by hiring the interested people around the globe. The management and the employees in the film industry should support individual such as women of color to take the leadership position and men should also support them where necessary to ensure the company achieves adequate workforce diversity.

Human Resource management have a critical role of ensuring the achievement of workforce diversity in an organization by taking specific steps. One of the important action that HR can take to achieve diversity in the workplace is nurturing a culture in the company that is inclusive as much as possible. Creating an inclusive culture in the Hollywood film industry will ensure that the black women and women in general regardless of race can have more leadership positions as compared to current situation where most of the top seats are dominated by male.  Another important step that HR should take is making the selection criteria and hiring process to be transparent enabling the most qualified applicant to take the position. HR management in the film industry should empower the women and minorities to stay loyal to the organization and through this, the industry can be able to achieve diversity in its workforce.

Implementing some of the practices are essential in helping HR management to improve diversity and inclusion as well as creating collaborative working environment for all the employees in the organization. One of the best thing to do is to practice openness with the company goals and troubles enabling the employees to work towards achieving the set goals and objectives (Gratton Lynda and Erickson). Cohesion in the workplace will ensure diversity and create passion among the employees that will enable them to identify the ultimate goals of the organization. Another important thing that the HR can practice is to encourage innovation by ensuring that employees have regular brainstorming sessions that enable them come up with new ways of completing tasks. Using this technique will promote diversity and responsiveness to the issues in the workplace as well as motivating workers to try new ways of solving problems.
