Is College the Best Option?
The world has significantly advanced throughout and the need for education has increased considerably. Specifically, in the United States, education is pivotal in the competitive job market. However, there are rising costs associated with acquiring college education that has raised the debate of whether it is worth it. It is not a secret that education grants opportunities which can progress an individual when the chances are effectively utilized. The main debate that exists is can one have access to equal opportunities when they both have varying academic levels. In the current society, the college education is not considered an option but a necessity. “If you think education is expensive try ignorance” is a phrase that has made the society believe that education is a crucial determinant to the success of an individual. A successful career requires individuals to have the desired knowledge, confidence and technical as well as social skills. Therefore, college is the ultimate option since these skills are primarily acquired through a college education. The importance of college education is mainly defined by its pivotal influence in society and personal life. A college education provides the required technical skills and life skills that are critical in sustenance and development in life.
Conversely, arguments regarding the necessity of college education are mainly based on the opportune for jobs. Argues that college education does not automatically relate to higher pay or a successful person. When focusing on the market opportunities that do not require a college education, a high school diploma graduate can as well receive the job effortlessly. A significant amount of money and time can be wasted studying a degree that one does not have a passion for and end up doing something unrelated to their field of study. Additionally, other people say that high school graduates are equally employable and capable of succeeding in life.
Advantages
A path to Good Career
College graduates have more job opportunities compared to high school graduates. The career opportunities accessible after college include medicine, engineering, law, and management. A successful career requires a person to have the knowledge, social and technical skills, and confidence. The college education is vital as it provides these benefits. College education is very significant in our life as it enhances communication skills. College graduates have more job opportunities that are offered by private and governmental institutions. College education improves the students’ confidence, attitude, the way of thinking and observing, style and maturity. The time spent in college provides students with the freedom to have personal and intellectual growth. Also, students can socialize and work with other people. The college graduate has more significant earnings than a high school graduate. The best method of learning and building society is by obtaining a college degree in fields like sociology, literature, and physics.
Sense of Responsibility
A college education provides a student with a sense of responsibility in the process of human growth. People who are responsible for their work and duty assist in developing a country that is socially and economically active. Students in colleges are not forced to study like in high school; hence, they become very responsible and attend classes willingly. Colleges offer facilities like libraries, internet, and newspapers for the students to learn independently. This is because education a continuous process as people can even spend fifty years in studying. Many students not only join colleges for good salary but also to grow deep in the world of knowledge. Colleges teach the students how to identify good and bad companies of people and have conscious and subconscious minds that provide the ability to analyze whether those companies can benefit them in the future and whether they have positive or negative influence to their lives.
Disadvantages
Colleges Operating as a Business
Currently, the educational institutions in the United States are structured to run more like business corporations instead of providing quality education whereby students are viewed like consumers who want to have a degree and move on. The challenge is that students do not receive tangible benefits from the college apart from the usual skills then must obtain from the period of enrollment in the facility. The student is investing money in the money-oriented colleges without knowing when chasing a dream, which is not guaranteed of being attained and the colleges are eagerly waiting to receive payment. To make sure that students receive physical skills from the colleges, the facilities should begin treating them like students ready to gain knowledge and not customers willing to spend their money. Most educational facilities lack proper methods of providing quality education. It is difficult for an instructor to maintain the attention of college students for more than twenty minutes knowing that the class period is fifty minutes.
More Social Activities than Academics
College students concentrate more on social media like Facebook and Twitter than the classwork materials. Students come to school more often because of social activities than the sponsored academic events provided. As the students get admitted to the colleges, they are very keen on the new college facilities, residence hall features, the art sports complex status and they have little information concerning the classroom modernization. The increasing number of students prefer attending the most expensive schools, with prestigious recreational centres, the largest football pits, and most informed students unions. All these factors do not influence the student’s success academically. Many colleges have invested more on facilities, amenities, dining than modernizing the classrooms which remain stuck for an extended period. Research shows that there no improvement in the academic performances because school administrators concentrate more on the future stake of their sports teams or the physical appearance of their colleges in the magazines. Recent college graduates do not have critical thinking or transferable skills, and the employers are disappointed with the poor education quality.
Conclusion
Educationally, college should only apply to the people who want to specialize in specific fields of study. Financially, college is important because college graduates receive a higher salary than high school graduates. The college education is a better investment as it offers more finances in the long run than the high school graduates.
