Analysis: Themes and Subthemes
Education is the first central themes in the interviews. A college education is essential for young people, and all the interviewed youths are keen on choosing the right schools for them. Some are motivated like social acceptance, religious beliefs, and career choices. For instance, Elisa sought a college with a Spanish cultural atmosphere to feel at home and settle down faster. Social acceptance is essential for a person moving into new surroundings, especially for young people. Therefore, these students made the right considerations before choosing their respective colleges. New environments such as colleges and universities shape a person’s future, either positively or negatively, and the students require support from fellow learners and adults.
Race is another significant theme in these interviews. The majority of the students have mixed-racial backgrounds, which influences their college and career choices. For instance, Alina’s parents are Cuban and Puerto Rican, and as immigrants, they valued education very much, passing similar values to Alina. Such people with diverse cultural backgrounds, a sense of belonging, and a community atmosphere are essential. Hence, many mixed-racial students choose their respective colleges with strong communal values mixed with quality education values. Race shapes a person’s perspective on life and social interaction. For instance, Gloria considers Midwest unsuitable for her due to the largely white population and lack of Cuban foods.
Identity is a central theme in the interviews. Many students often change their identity based on new environments and new friends. For instance, Carlos changes his accent when at home and school or depending on the people around him. When at school, he prefers a Spanish accent because he has several Hispanic friends, while at home, he maintains his Miami accent. In essence, identity affects how a person fits in a new environment and influences their new friends. Some students like Elisa and Alina choose schools with similar backgrounds as theirs since they could identify with these surroundings and feel at home.
