Saponification, a method involving heating fats and oils and reacting to the soaps with a liquid alkali, and as a result, soap, water, and glycerin are obtained. Also, soaps are obtained through the neutralization of fatty acids with an alkali. In neutralization, fats and oils are split with steam at high pressure to give glycerin and fatty acids. The sodium salt is obtained when the alkali is sodium hydroxide and potassium soap when alkali is potassium hydroxide. Most of the shaving creams and liquid hand soaps are from potassium soap since it is softer and gentle on the skin. The liquid hand soaps are used by both men and women, whether young or old and thus can be called a unisex product since t does not choose any gender when it comes to its usage. Shaving creams are also used by both men and women, especially during shaving of pubic hairs and even shaving beards.
The cleaning action of the soaps is mostly affected by the hardness of the water. The soap’s cleansing property’s effectiveness is reduced when the water used together with the soap is hard water. The hardness in the water results from mineral salts like magnesium, calcium, and iron. The salt reacts with soap to form scum; a precipitated which is not soluble in water. Scum is not easily rinsed away, and it remains behind, making deposits on clothes and makes the fabrics of the cloth stiff. To increase the effectiveness of the cleaning detergents, breaking water hardness is essential. The water’s hardness is removed by boiling the water before using it (Pohle and Stuart, 1940). Soap detergents work by the water-hating molecules repelled by water molecules and attracted to oil in the cloth’s dirt. On the other hand, the water-loving molecule is drawn to the water molecules. The forces opposing disentangle soil and append it in water.
Personal cleaning has not only started today but also began in prehistoric times. During the excavation process, evidence of soap is shown by material similar to soap in cylinders made of clay found in the mining sites of Babylon. The soaps that most men and women use include liquid soaps, bar soaps, and hand cleansers. The choice of the soap determines the overall performance of the soap on the skin and contributes to the person’s overall appearance. For example, using even tone soaps like Dettol, even tone soap makes one appear smoother and more attractive than dark spots and using ordinal bar soap in cleaning. Apart from cleaning functions, the soap also plays the role of disinfectants, deodorants, and fabric conditioners. With the improved technology, companies producing soaps include all three functions in just one soap, making it cheaper for the consumer to use it. With the use of soap, one will not need perfume since the soap can perform these functions.
