In the ancient days, there existed no cameras that would take pictures to retain memories of some leaders, activities, historical events or historic buildings. There is always a solution for every problem that occurs and in those days there were people with the skills of sculpture architect they made sculptures of gods, emperors, buildings, people in their natural appearance. The main aim of the sculptures was to keep memories of anything historic that happened. It was practised by both the Romans and the Greeks they were connected in the western mind of doing things. Their arts were known as classical art.
There were differences between the Roman and Greek sculptures and they are well discussed below
Formation of the sculptures
The Greeks created and formed sculptures of human forms of athletes, heroes their gods such as the god of fertility, and the heroes that they adored most. When sculpting the images they got their inspiration from idols that they worshipped and their characteristics such as their intellectual skills or capacity. The physical appearance of the sculptures did not demonstrate any emotions even when they were sculpted doing difficult or painful tasks. They also were a representation of nudity most of the images were of nude people. This was where the difference came in in the Ancient Roman sculptures, they tried their best to bring out a real image with the ordinary people with their beauty and any flaws that a person had, their inspiration came from the personality they were painting physical features their real sculptures brought a lot of attention to the Roman sculptures due to their designs. The Roman sculptures did not hide their emotions they were displayed and this even made the sculptures to be more realistic they were sculpted with much interest to bring perfection out of it. For example the Zeus and Vespian bust sculptures.
Materials used to form sculptures
Everything has a beginning and when the Greeks started their art they were using the bronze stones to create the sculptures but after a period of time still in the art of the sculptures, they realised a new material that was more effective and more presentable than the bronze they started sculpting the sculptures out of the white marble. After completion of the art, they are smartly painted with bright colours to increase the attractiveness of the sculpture they were commonly referred to as the heroic nudes. The difference with the Roman sculptures was initially when the Romans started the art of sculptures they used terracotta and bronze for the creation, they later copied the Greece people and used marble of Pentelic and Paros. The materials that they now used helped a lot in making refined and very extravagant paintings. They utilised precious glasses and metals to built special sanctuaries. Another difference is that they did not paint their sculptures it was designed to leave the sculpture in its original form.
Choice of subject
When the Greeks were working on a sculpture they concentrated more on enhancing the external physical features of the body such as the muscles and also the youth strength of their idol, heroes or mythological features they successfully created idealistic sculptures although they were not realistic they were beautifully crafted. The roman statues were sculpted in a way to imitate the position or poses for the person image being crafted, it could have been an image of a queen or an Emperor. they represented their work by using a lot of busts to enhance the beauty of their statues. The Romans concentrated more on the head part of the body to show the old age of the sculpture. There were major differences in the Greek and Roman arts.
Architectural scripture
The Romans included a sculpture with free-standing architecture the figures mostly were of their noble leaders and the historical events associated with the leader, for example, the Roman Frieze sculpture represented the success of Emperor Trijan the roman statues could not stand on their own they were designed to be placed like a post hence had to be supported. The Greek created free-standing sculptures and to add onto it they had the skills to create architectural designs. The designs form the horizontal strips and were presented with the gods and idols, the architectures were mostly placed on the front of the temple.
Some of the works that the Romans copied from the Greek sculptures were the stones they adapted to model their sculptures the white marble they used it as it produced very refined arts and ones that were so extravagant. They were also keen to follow the traditions of the Greeks in designing their statues which were a combination of a Greece idol and one of the Roman leaders they later advanced and made their own designs of more realistic images.
Another thing that the Romans imitated from the Greeks is the free-standing images they had to copy that to make sure that their statues could stand on their own without any support. When representing their statues or keeping in the museums it would be an advantage to have statues that do not need support as they can easily be put up for demonstration. Another thing that they copied from the Greeks is the art of painting their statues they influenced the Romans as their statues looked more appealing and prestigious they used bright colours to paint the images, they even used the same colour pigments as the Greeks to decorate even stones.
Also, the Romans incorporated some of the ways that the Greeks used to use in the art such as the use of idolized images the athletics and the use of the noble leaders to their sculptures, the major part that they imitated was the use of their religion they made scriptures that the Greeks had used to make their gods honour their religion. It seems like the Romans also copied the Gods of the Greeks as they worshipped and idolized the same gods. They shared a lot in cultural ways and patterns.
One major similarity that the Greeks and the Romans have in common is the expression of love and idolization of human forms of idolization, heroes, mythological features. For the things they love and treasure they create sculptures of them and want to associate themselves with them alone. They attribute their success to their gods and they exchange a lot of their cultures to ensure they can enrichen their communities. They craft sculptures of properties that they want to be associated with and the sculptures remain a source of memory for many years, they become historical sites that attract tourists to their states.
Conclusions
The Greek-Roman sculptures have greatly contributed to the preservation of memories for many people of a very different generation.it has enrichened the variety of treasures in the world and has created attraction sites for many. They created history by coming up with their skills of art they have majorly contributed to the enhancement of careers such as architecture where they go way back to emulate the Greek architectural skills that had been applied by them which is a motivation for their studies. We all should contribute to the growth of history by coming up with inventions that will remain to serve memory and as history.
