Ethical Scenario (BAECE)

Copy and paste the specific professional standard that will help you solve this ethical dilemma.

Standard 7: Families

Why did you choose the standard you did?

I chose this standard because it deals with being collaborative with the families. This standard would be the best route when dealing with a father (or mother) who is upset his son is playing in the play kitchen. Having a good rapport with parents will lead to better communication. Educators and parents need to work together to support their children; it shouldn’t rely on one another. By building these relationships, parents might be more open to listening to the background on why we do certain things in the classroom and agree to give it a try. Standard 7 states, “to support children’s optimal learning and development, programs must establish relationships with families based on mutual trust, respect, and involve families in their children’s educational planning” ( NAEYC, 2019). By giving them the information and respect for their beliefs, we may come to some agreement when it comes to how they feel about specific activities.

Describe the steps you would take to solve this problem.

First, I would set up a meeting with the parents to discuss their opinion on the matter. Setting up a meeting gives me the time to hear their beliefs and respond with why we play in the play kitchen as an activity daily. I’d educate the parents on the benefits of dramatic play and encourage social interactions, imagination, and language skills. After discussing how we feel about the situation, we can collaboratively decide how to move forward.

Create an ethical scenario of your own that pertains to your field of study for your peers to solve. Be sure that your scenario is detailed enough so that your peers from a different field of study can understand the situation and problem solve.

Lizzy is in Kindergarten and is a great student. She is positive, outgoing, and full of light. She and her family are Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her mother has asked you not to allow her to participate in any holiday or birthday celebrations due to their beliefs. You give her choices of painting or computer games while the rest of the class has a Halloween party and participates with Halloween art. She cries and tells you it’s ok for her to join and not to tell her mom. You explain to her you are respecting her mom’s wishes, but it doesn’t help. She is distraught and doesn’t understand why she cannot join. As a teacher, what would do to make sure she feels included?
