Writing is hard, as stated in many works that I have read through this semester. However, with practice, forming words into logical sentences becomes easier, and that is what this semester has done to my writing ability. When I first got into this class, I was but a novice, but at this moment, I can say that I am a capable writer. In the class, I was able to really develop my writing from learning how to avoid plagiarism to learning how to summarize pieces of works substantially. In that part of my learning process, it occurred to me that I dint have a good grasp of the concepts. However, learning the basics was just the tip of the iceberg, as soon after, I was thrown into the first assignments where I would be required to use the skill that I had learned at the beginning of the class. My first major reading was based on the chapter Simplicity in William Zinsser’s book. The chapter provided insight into making writing easier by avoiding the unnesssesary unnecessary is prevalent in today’s writing. The chapter was thought provoking, and it allowed me to think about my previous works. In the past, I had been a victim of being redundant in many of my writing assignments; the chapter pointed out this fact in a subtle manner.
My next reading assignment was on the toolbox by Stephen King in his book, the memoir of the craft. The chapter was an eye-opener. The chapter introduced the concept of having a good grasp of one’s tools to be a good writer. The assignment based on the chapter involved rhetorically analyzing the chapter. The assignment was relatively easy. And I found that tackling the chapter was a breeze. I enjoyed reading the chapter in its entirety, as it offered advice on writing that only the most skilled writer can have. In the same chapter, I received another assignment, which was an argument analysis of the book. Writing the argument analysis was relatively challenging, and I found myself continuously reading and editing the particular writing to come up with a coherent discussion.
The final reading was in chapter one of Annie Dillard’s writing life. The chapter was a very interesting read. At this point, I had gotten the hang of writing. Suddenly, the word that was a hazard to put together was easier to put together. At this point, I discovered that the class was having an impact on my writing. Did assignments on the chapter and found that the assignments were deliberately meant to improve my ability to analyze a piece of texts critically. Having read the three readings, I synthesized the knowledge gained and presented my synthesis essay. The synthesis easy was quite challenging. I had so many ideas that I wanted to use so that I couldn’t decide on which to use. Success came in forming a relatively good thesis statement that helped me focus my synthesis essay.
All in all, the class was offered knowledge that has evolved my writing. Constant feedback from my instructor and peers helped me correct mistakes and added some information that improved my writing as the class went by. The class moved logically, starting with the basics and eventually building up to the grand finale, which a synthesis writing. The synthesis writing focused on the three was readings that formed the basis of the classwork that is simplicity by William Zinsser, the toolbox by Stephen King, and Annie Dillard’sDillard’s chapter one in the writing life. Receiving good grades on most of the assignments that I had poured my heart into formed the triumphs that I had in the class. They were the culmination of the hard work that I ad place. Overall, in as much as writing is hard, the class has eventually made writing a lot more easily.
