The video has completely transformed my outlook towards change and made me realize that I possess the power to change any situation/status. According to the speaker, existing systems have since time immemorial propagated learned helplessness across many generations, which has created dependency among the masses (“YouTube”). People are continually becoming afraid to take that leap of faith and combat life challenges without seeking assistance. We do not trust that our expertise and abilities can help us traverse the murky waters that we encounter in our daily lives. Therefore, the speaker urges us to find a way around learned helplessness and regain control of our destiny. Although change is imminent, we need to dictate our life’s change process.
After reading the article, I am left astonished at the lengths modern-day parents are taking to propagate learned helplessness among their kids. It is heart-breaking to note that parents ae trying to dictate the daily activities of their young ones even at the university level (“Crazy Parents Are Calling Up Colleges, Pretending to Be Their Kids”). The message conveyed by the article and the video is that learned helplessness is a “disease” that has wreaked the future of many generations. It is a condition that is prevalent among emerging adults and the youth not far behind them because their parents have normalized dependency. Guardians are repeatedly failing on their role of encouraging minors to be agents of change by taking charge of their future.
I agree with the sentiments of the speaker that the pampering of the millennial generation has resulted in learned helplessness in today’s society (“YouTube”). I strongly believe that societal attitudes have inadvertently created a generation of people struggling to overcome learned helplessness, although through best intentions. Parents are striving to ensure that their young ones experience the best life possible, but while doing so, they are propagating dependency among them. These minors are not allowed to think on their own and are assured of assistance all the time. Therefore, there is a need for guardians to take a step back and allow their minors to become independent, especially intellectually.
