Nursing theories have significant implications in today’s nursing since it aids in educating, research and nursing care. Nursing theories are organized bodies of knowledge that define what nursing is, what they do and why they do it.[H1] (Wayne, 2020). In this paper, I will be comparing and contrasting Orem’s theory and Roy nursing model and conclude the best way to apply the theories.
Orem’s theory depicts that human beings can perform self-care and sustain their health and life. It goes on and incorporates the self-care deficit and the nursing process theory, which involves survival needs. If they are unable to achieve them, the self-care deficit develops. The idea of the nursing process comes in to bridge the gap created by self-care and therapeutic self-care demand. This way, nurses assist the individual performs the necessary actions like promoting personal development, directing, supporting acting for others and educating them.
Ray Nursing Model explains the continuous interaction of the human being environment (stimuli) and nursing, which helps bring a balance and adaptation. Adaption is a system in which an individual is managing him/herself emotionally, socially, physically, spiritually and mentally (Norwich University Online, 2017). The nursing role comes in to assist in adjusting and improving their capabilities. Roy Adaptation Theory H[H2] as significant impacts on education, research and nursing care.
Orem’s and Roy’s adaptation theories are both major theories but have the same applicability as the Middle Range Theories found on interrelating structure, that stress on the nursing practice. The approaches, therefore, enhance better patient care, upgrade the rank in the nursing profession and assist in good communication among nurses. Orem and Roy theories used the same paradigms that relate to nursing of person and focuses on health and life improvement of life. In both models, past experiences, age, developmental and social-cultural environment affects individuals. Also, both theories are rehabilitative and preventive nursing models.
Orem’s Model centers on an individual and their capabilities to work on their self-care. On the other hand, Roy’s Model has four adaptation modes of survival, role function, self –concept, interdependence, and physiological mode. Orem’s Model has one disadvantage; it does not consist of all aspects of care and needs of a particular patient, whereas Ray Model explains the meaning of family, environment, community and nurse society relationships. Moreover, Orem’s theory is more used in acute settings, whereas Roy’s Model is used in chronic settings.
The Orem Nursing Theory is more applicable to me now and in the future. It is also more practical in the hospital and community set up due to self-care theory, which involves the patient’s assessments and the nurse diagnosis, the expected client results, quality assurance, external agency reports and clinical research. It is applicable in areas like nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and the community.
