Personal Philosophy of Nursing and Values
Nursing practices’ performance and outcome seem to be significantly influenced by the baccalaureate- level of education. Nurses with vast knowledge and experiences in baccalaureate education were associated with high performance. Therefore, as a nurse, it is important I understand the values and approaches that contribute to an excellent interpersonal relationship because it will help me understand the patients’ health complications properly, thus enabling me to provide quality care to them. As a nurse, if I embrace the five professional values stipulated in the 2008 AACN Baccalaureate Essentials, I would be capable of making an ethical decision on dilemma issues. When I compare the five professional values, I would prefer to associate myself with integrity, human dignity, and altruism. Human dignity is an essential professional value that involves respecting not only the patient but also colleagues. Therefore, I would seek to respect everybody to create a highly motivated workforce in a healthcare setting where patients feel cared for and engaged. I am always coherent and upright; therefore, I provide patient care following the code of ethics’ conceptual frameworks.
As a professional nurse, I’m always committed to follow my personal and professional ethical standards. In this regard, I believe my values and beliefs coincide with the AACN values. My values and beliefs are an essential element for my professional practice because they help me expand the knowledge that is helpful for problem-solving. The ACCN values focus on honesty, respect, and ethical decision making, which are my favorite values when performing nursing practice. Ethical decision making revolves around the principle of utility whereby nursing practices performed should guarantee patient safety. When the working environment embraces patient safety culture, the quality of healthcare is likely to improve because of decreased medical errors. Additionally, as a nurse with a strong work ethic, I believe in the cooperative workforce because joint efforts, especially in healthcare settings, result in increased productivity. Therefore, I always feel free when assisting my colleagues in making ethical decisions on challenging nursing practices. However, I hold some values that are not presented by AACN. When performing my nursing practices, I embrace cultural diversity. I perform my duties, bearing in mind that if I adopt monoculturalism, I won’t be exercising the duties manifested upon me as a nurse. Lack of cultural diversity in healthcare settings is detrimental because the majority’s will is followed, but the interests of the minority are ignored. Since my primary responsibility is to deliver quality services, I take all the patients with the same intensity without considering either their race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or ethnicity. Cultural diversity serves as a springboard for boosting equity in the delivery of healthcare services.
Conclusion
The nursing profession is a significant element in any country’s healthcare system because it determines the quality of care delivery. The nursing profession requires the nurses to develop their personal philosophical frameworks of values that they should have to deliver quality care to the patients. Reflecting on the AACN value, my personal belief and values are essential when performing nursing practices because three of them are contained in AACN value. However, I possess some of the values that are not advocated by AACN that I found to be useful when performing my nursing practices, such as promoting cultural diversity.
