Challenges of Globalization on Sovereignty of Nation States
One of the perceived challenges of globalization regarding limiting state power is opening up the global market. It has made labor, capital, merchandise, and other resources available on the global stage. Economic globalization has led to the formation of various international institutions that control and regulate the movement of factors of production. It has had consequences on state power since the international regulations are overruling the local regulations. Nation-states are no longer able to control their domestic economies, which are hugely affected by the global economy. It is a real limit to nation-states’ sovereignty, considering that some international companies control enormous finances that could even be more than some nation-states’ GDP.
Another potential challenge posed by transnational movement and crime could be nation-states’ complexity in enforcing their local laws on crimes that span several states. With the ease of communication and movement worldwide, international criminals have also emerged who commit offenses in different parts of the globe and take refuge elsewhere. It could affect nation-states’ power in applying local laws, prosecution, and even tracing suspects and criminals. However, this challenge can be regarded to be strengthening nation-states in the face of transnational crime. When various nation-states come together to address this concern, the individual states become more capable of handling the challenges locally. Furthermore, the international organizations in charge of security and safety integrate the nation-states and offer support towards already existing strategies and approaches made by nation-states. In essence, the nation-states are strengthened, and their sovereignty is upheld.
