Characteristics and mechanics of successful teams

Teams are successful when they work in cooperation and complete synergy. The success of the entire organization rests on the strength of teamwork. It does not matter if it’s a football team, a biology lab in your school, or some sales team. All of them require cooperation and chemistry to make them effective. It is interesting to mention here that not all of the members of the team are equal or have similar traits. All members can be different and unique; however, every one of them possesses some special skills that make them different. When people of different skills are allowed to form a team, they can perform work efficiently and use their individual skills to exhibit extraordinary outcomes. In this presentation, I am going to discuss the characteristics of successful teams and their mechanics.

All successful teams follow a clear direction. Many organizations assemble a team in such a hurry, they fail to select the right person for the job, and as a result, the team cannot perform well. This implies selecting the right person for team formation is one of the “must-have” factors for successful teams. Therefore, there should be a clear direction about the goals and objectives of the job and, in this context, make an adequate team that has the capability to get the job done.

Another property of a successful team is to have open and honest communication between team members.  It is a common proverb that, “Communication is the close brother of chemistry.” In any team, it’s important to ensure that team members are comfortable with each other; they do not hesitate to raise their concerns and share feedback about the goals and objectives. When team members are comfortable to talk with each other openly and honestly, a sense of camaraderie can be created among the team members. A useful tip for creating an environment for open and honest communication is to ensure that everybody listens to each other. Listening is not just a way to get informed about others’ views; it is a sign of respect and makes your speakers feel valued and respected. All in all, active listening helps to make great teams.

In a successful team, every team member must have his role defined. When all group members have their roles defined, they can perform their jobs well. If the team leader asks a group member about a job he is not assigned, the group member may lose interest in his own work since answering for others’ work creates an extra burden and affects the team spirit. Therefore, team members should be held responsible for those jobs they are clearly assigned to; holding them accountable for jobs they are not assigned to creates unnecessary risk. It’s imperative for the leader or task-master to be able to think about the big-picture, so he can define roles with smartness and in a methodical way. Additionally, team members should be mutually accountable; team members should be able to accept responsibility as individuals and as a team. If someone makes a mistake, the team should make up for that as a group and not let him take the fall for the mistake alone.

Lastly, team trust, collaboration, and common goals make the team successful. When all members have a common interest, they understand and work with a common purpose. Similarly, collaboration is an important trait of a successful team; when team members share the burden of each other and help each other grow, they actively increase the overall productivity of the entire team. Furthermore, team trust is a must-have for a successful team, and it can be developed using team-building exercises.

In short, a successful team makes a successful organization. When group members are free to raise their voice and are accountable for their own designated jobs, they can help each other grow and increase the effectiveness of the whole team, thus resulting in a successful team.
