Prison Reform

The research method used included educational programming; this is a study that was carried out to show how education influences those who are taken to prison. The data of those who ended to jail due to their educational level was taken. This data was then compared with those who were not educated. This research method included the reaching of the behaviour of the persons and their educational levels. The second research method that was used was the employment programming this was focused on determining whether the challenges of unemployment resulted in many of the person ending up to jail. This programming also was used to show whether the employment to some individuals caused them ending up to the prison. Also, the job in the prison which is in other words referred to as prison labour was captured in the employment programming and it was seen to reduce the misconducts in the prison simply because the prisoners were kept working even in the time when they should be violating the rules of the prison. The other aspect that was captured by the employment programming was the post-release employment which shown that the offenders don’t return to the offences that they were committing once they are released from prison this was evident by the low numbers of the same offenders going back to the jail after their release. The third method used was the social support programming this research method strictly focused on the antisocial group and those making gangs. It was designed to show whether the gang members and the antisocial group whether they could help themselves in any cases of misconduct. It was found that this antisocial behaviour and the formation of the gang in prison reduced misconduct by enhancing the excellent relationship with one another in prison and the avoidance of the conflict among the prisoners. The other research method used was the mental health programming this research method targeted on knowing the number of people that had a mental problem and how it affected their life in prison. It was observed in most prisons visited that many of the prisoners had mental issues. Although no case was evident according to the cited article, people with mental illness have the habit of causing brawl, which is a form of misconduct. The other research method used was domestic violence programming; this method targeted the group of prisoners who are released from prison. The research has shown that there was no clear case of misconduct. This was enhanced by the guidelines and the discipline that the prisoner is accorded while in prison the next research method used is the chemical dependency treatment this method is used to show the effects of the drugs administered to the prisoners. The study showed that the treatment reduced the misconduct within the prison. The other research method used was the sex offender treatment where the level of wrongdoing in prison was seen below. This was due to the discipline maintained in jail and the regret that occurred in their mind and had not to re-offend. The last and very crucial research method that was carried out was the prisoner re-entry program. This method was used. The study has shown that the prisoner’s re-entry in prison was very common due to the failure of the success rates outside after that the release. Due to lack of success, the prisoners tend to re-offend and are taken back to the prison. This is also shown to increase the rate of misconduct in the prison simply because the prisoners are used to the prison and takes it as home.

The sample size of the population was five hundred people per one hundred thousand people. The sampling method used was that the samples were taken randomly from various prisons and was interviewed to yield the required results. The procedure was the initial planning of which jail to visit then design the questionnaire, and then there would be ordering off the prisons to see. There would also be the form in which the approach to the prisoners would be. There were different data collection methods including; interviews questionnaires observations and also focus group discussion. Interviews were used in the less hostile prisoners where they would be asked some questions concerning their experience in that prison. The second method on the questionnaire was only applicable to those who could read and write; this had some limitations to those who could not read and write. The third method of data collection was the direct observation of the prisoners from the inside. This would enhance the examination of the conducts of different prisoners. The final form of data collection was the focus group discussion this was applicable in the scenarios where it was not possible to get into the prison. Or otherwise, the dungeon was restricted to only the prisoners, and no intruder was allowed to get in. the discussion would be based on the history of such prisons.

The questionnaire developed comprised of short sentences and very easy to read and figure out. The questionnaire was also short and precise. This was to avoid time-wasting and also avoid the decline of the questionnaire by the prisoners. Other items that were included were the pens to answer the questionnaire and some of the refreshments which would motivate the prisoners on carrying out the interview and writing the questionnaire well. The instrument that was developed by the researcher was that of being patient, and also bearing with harsh situations such as those of being turned away and being blocked from entering the prison.

The sample of the questionnaire would be:

How many years have you been here?

Have you ever experienced any case of misconduct among your fellow prisoners?

If yes, how many cases?

How many prisoners have been brought here for the second time?
