- What does the following in-text citation mean if you see it in an essay? (35)
The in-text citation (35) means page 35 of the reference material.
- If you see the above citation in an essay, what can you expect to find on the essay’s Works Cited page?
I expect to see full citation in the Works Cited page with the author’s name, the title of publication/reference material, year of publication, edition and the publisher.
- A citation in MLA format goes at the end of the sentence in which the source was cited. Does it go before the end punctuation (usually a period) or after it?
A citation in MLA format usually comes before the end punctuation.
- What does the following citation mean? (Jones 136-39, 145)
The citation (Jones 136-39,145) means that multiple page locations have been used from the source.
- What does this citation mean? (Taylor 54; Thomas 327)
The citation (Taylor 54; Thomas 327) means that two works have been cited.
- What information do you cite in your in-text citation if there is no listed author?
In-text citations for reference material with no listed author, one is encouraged to use a shortened title of the work in place of the author’s name. Common practice requires that the title is placed in quotation marks inside parenthesis marks, especially if it is a short reference work. In scenarios where the title of the reference material is a longer work, it is recommended to italicize the title inside parenthesis marks. Moreover, it is prudent to include a page number if it is available.

- The citation (Ladenson 188) is a parenthetical reference at the end of that particular sentence showing the author’s last name and page number of that specific source used in the text. It is included just before the punctuation mark.
