Law enforcement institutions
Law enforcement institutions are entrusted with the tasks that require a high degree of integrity within the police; police officers may become vulnerable when they act unlawfully outside their remit. It’s quite a prerogative experience when tasked with the overwhelming burden of investigating the tremendous incident of police brutality; the experience got me to wonder whether the law enforcement agencies are held accountable for their actions. The fundamental rights enriched in the constitution are quite inherent for every individual. According to Our civil rights, we are not supposed to be inflicted with any cruel and unusual punishment. According to my research, the police is to ensure that human rights are well protected. However, most of the people tend to mistake police officers for robots. These arouse my different emotions and attitudes towards police (Weisburd).
Heriot, Gail claims that the fundamental principle of democratic society for police to be held accountable for their actions. However, police brutality is one among other forms of police misconduct, where they use violence and increase the use of deadly force in subduing the people; these experiences seem to be happening in several countries. People perceive that police accounts of their crimes, and the decrease of deadly force is a way that needs to change. Although law enforcers are authorized to use specified circumstances, the level of power should not exceed the justifiable reason, that may attract public attention (Weisburd).
What got my concern is the recent developments about police use of excessive use of force, that range from well-publicized incidents to onset of aggressiveness. For instance, there was this incident in my study of videotape of Rodney king being tortured by Los Angeles police officers. The low enforcers beat Rodney king, then struck a dozen times. This incident provides a reach material that manifests police brutality in public. Kings episode with the police outrange over brutality let to the eruption of riots that at list left more than fifty-five deaths, and a lot of injuries (Weisburd pg. 1-3). This strike an unanswerable question, who are law enforcers? The law enforcers who are to protect human rights are the once abusing the privilege. Police violence is rooted in the past and false narrative of racial difference that precedes aggressive and violent policing.
During my research, I encountered lots of setbacks since I was haunted by thoughts and besieged by negative emotions; Rodney king incidents led to failer and struggled due to sentimental. From my broader perspective, the impact of police brutality to society terminates the trust of the people towards law enforcement officers. However, the struggle led new analyzes of the problem, A compressive insight from a cultural and historical aspect. Police functionality is mostly influenced by cultural and historical impacts, considering the population and how it is structured. Osse Claims that police force moved a long way with them from the past associations that have been vindicated by a couple of events. Therefore, police officers continue to project a bad image in society, and people still express hostile attitude ranging from peaceful protest to violent rebellions. The police brutality creates attention and conditions which are highly consequential and long-range decisions.
The system that is supposed to hold police integrity and deter misconduct have failed to carry out their duties and keep responsible police misusing their powers and abusing their rights. For the officer to be accountable, they need to receive proper directions and be equipped to carry out their functions and thus avoiding incidents like Rodney King beatings. Moreover, significant responsibility needs a formal complaints system which is easily accessible and can effectively investigate allegations. The discretion of police as a strong arm of the state reflects authorization to enforce laws. , the government tries to influence the authority to serve their interest rather than the public; hence the issue of cultural and historical perspectives of police brutality is witnessed. Proper policing needs public collaboration, where the public can see a victim of a crime and provide relevant information to the police, the police, on the other hand, must comply and show professional interest to cooperate. Furthermore, police accountability and integrity are the fundamental goals to establish and restore public trust (Osse, pg. 1-16).
In summary, law enforcement officers provide a safe environment for every individual to live; however, they are under high scrutiny and pressure due to increased brutality. Police brutality affects all set of generations; moreover, it misses the mark when it ignores the history of policing that does not deserve respect for its citizen, especially their rights and liberty in the society. I sensed stereotype and prejudice that provide implicit manifestation in the actions of the law enforcers. Police brutality shows a lack of accountability and protests appeals for more vital protections against police. However, their more consequences for officers who committed the crime of brutality in the system, although political ideas of civil rights influence it, police have developed an attitude towards the society and denying the corrections that exist.
