Identify three events from the period of our course,” U.S. History Since 1877″, and briefly explain the possibilities you chose.
American history recognizes the period of 1877 to 1900 as a reconstruction era. However, several events have been noticed in United States History since 1877. It was a period of reconstruction and industrialism that occurred in the United States. The main events that happened to and since 1877 were railroad construction and expansion of transportation, creation and development of the steel industry, and establishment of labor unions.
Firstly, the knights of labor events were more successful from 1877 to 1888 as they deepened their sense of solidarity, including forming secret meetings to evade hostile treatment. The Unions helped widely to increase the cooperation between the owners and workers. One of the significant Knights of Labor function was to abolish the workers’ payment system and create a unified economy of the businesses owned by workers. It established more than 140 suitable workshops where workers tended to share decisions and profits. The union supported the eight-hour workday and the regulation of trusts (Hook, 2016). Secondly, in 1881 s steel company was established in Pittsburgh Besemer. The company encompassed nearly 400 men and boys who worked in the firm. The workers kept the mill working into 12-hour shifts with harsh conditions. The invention of machines increased jeopardy as the manual operation of work became tedious such as plucking tobacco. Therefore, railroad and oil development events were developed and improved in 1880 after several innovations in the United States. Thus, railroads’ major construction effectively improved the transportation system, thus helping move people and fright spreading communications and reinventing time, including trying the notion together. The oil industries produced oil used in the railroads, thus stimulating growth as they require numerous resources for developing wood, coal, brass, whereby during the 1880s, more than 75% of all U.S. steel. The cooperation between the steel industry, the railroad, and oil production lowered transportation costs (Hook, 2016).
Carry out a scavenger hunt to find three events that occurred in the period of U.S. History to 1877 that are directly related to the ones you chose for “since 1877” events and discuss briefly.
The period to 1877 witnessed three main events: creating a steel company and railroad by Andrew Carnage through the formation of Iron Works that later became U.S. steel Company. The company led to massive industrialization, which encouraged vertical integration in the heavy industries with a reliable source of raw materials. The firm created products for other more giant people like the railroad and factory constructors. Therefore, the market witnessed a significant change whereby the success was embedded in securing a few resources, including holding down production (Hook, 2016). In 1872, the biggest steel mill was built, creating more employment opportunities and a locomotive factory, which became the steel empire’s nucleus. Secondly, the oil and railroad company was created by Rockefeller, who mainly specialized in refining petroleum. In 1870, the Standard Oil Company of Ohio had high quality and low-cost product as a competitive standard. The oil company increased employment opportunities and dominated America stretching from manufacturing to marketing. Throughout 1870 Rockefeller held the business embedded together in an informal pool and several combinations of firms. Lastly, Labor Unions were created mainly in 1870 for the iron molders, railroad workers, and farmers. The National Union (NLU) was formed to bring reforms for both skilled and unskilled workers within a nationwide organization. The union improved working conditions for the employees, controlled their work, and helped them earn a decent living (Hook, 2016).
Provide a supporting argument that explains why the three events you chose from U.S. History to 1877 are related to the three from U.S. History since 1877.
The events that occurred before 1877 in the United States history closely related to the events established since the 1877 period, as discussed for two reasons. Firstly, between 1860 to 1990 marked the reconstruction era as more people witnessed the innovation and rebuilding of America’s economy. Secondly, industrialization was a continuous form of globalization as communication was improving, and new political scenarios were established where people’s rights were fought for more than individualism.
