The team has won 54 percent of its games in each of the past three years. While it’s not a bad record, the team is aiming at a stellar season this year. Because of the history of starting strong then fading towards the end of the season, the team and the coach should lay down a performance guide to ensure the team stays healthy throughout the season. Management by objectives model focuses less on activities and more on goals to be achieved. One of the team’s primary purposes is to ensure no burn out at the end of the season. Maintaining a regular schedule -for practice before the season and throughout the season- is paramount in improving the outcome of the players. Basing on the MBO model, the team’s inputs would be the players, experience, finances, materials like balls, uniforms to play, and pay players. With the knowledge and the addition of two highly recruited players, the team can win more games. To motivate the team, the coach can introduce more games during practice instead of drills. Players are more motivated to win a game; hence more games increase work ethic and focus and keep players having fun. Playing serious games more often will improve the prospects of increasing the success rate of the team. Getting used to playing all the time, even in practice, conditions the players keeping them motivated and maintaining the right attitude. Another goal attached to conditioning players is to ensure that they are well-rested before every game to avoid providing quality games.

To stay motivated, the team players need feedback individually and as a whole team. Different payers play for different positions hence the need for personalized feedback. Feedback for any job is crucial to help people evaluate and improve themselves where necessary. The coach should ensure that even when the input is not positive, it is constructive. Ensuring the players know there are appreciated and always have room for improvement is paramount in maintaining their confidence throughout the season. The coach should make it a habit always to remind them that a win belongs to the whole team to promote teamwork in the group. The coach and team should also aim to avoid complex goals, which put unnecessary pressure on the team. According to the Management by Objectives model, a too complicated objective and goal can be self-defeating. The coach should aim to improve its performance but by a reasonable range to ensure that the team stays motivated even with gradual improvement. Another way of encouraging is giving the players a voice. The coach is the guide and supervisor, but the players are crucial to winning a game. Like in any other organization, giving the players a voice helps understand things from their perspective. For instance, why do they fade towards the end of the season?
