Objective 2
- Inyour opinion, based on what criteria does the American public choose the president? Do Americans choose based on character? Based on accomplishments? Based on the platform closest to their ideals? Upon what will you base your voting decisions?
The Americans base all those things in the selection of the President. In the present day, the campaigns are usually all about who is not the choice for the people and not about who should be voted in. People will keep on talking about why the other person should not be considered. It is not about what they are going to do, the character, the accomplishments, or the ideal. All these do not matter. The selection of the opponent is usually based on the character in my opinion.
Objective 3
- WereJacksonand the principles he represented healthy or dangerous for the United States? Identify the best and worst things Jackson did or encouraged as president and explain what you think about them.
Jackson and the principles he represented were dangerous as he advocated for democracy as opposed to republicanism. The worst thing he did was to ignore the constitution and act in opposition to the law. He used to satisfy his personal gains through the presidency.
Objective 5
- Whatdoyou think of the idea of legislating prohibition (or creating any law against addictive sub-stances)? Do you think it is an effective method for curbing/preventing social problems? Do you think it’s constitutional? On what basis?
The idea did not work very well in regard to the prohibition of Alcohol in the United States and one can see how poorly illegalizing drugs has worked. It is actually noted that the various social problems in the society are due to a ban on the drugs as opposed to the effects that such substances may have. One of the main concerns with the drug legislation is that it does not get majority support. The implication of this is that many people who are assumed to be law-abiding are ready to break this law. There is a lot of knee-jerking relating to drugs legislation.
Objective 6
- What are the main immigrant issues the country faces today? Do today’s immigrants get a warmer or cooler welcome than the Irish and Germans of the 1840s and 1850s? What accounts for this? Some of the main immigrant issues is that of cheap labour from the legal immigrants, the displacement of indigenous people from the labour market, along with the virtue that the immigrants are not assimilating to the existing population. There is also a strain between the residents and the immigrants. This has been attributed to increased levels of crime and the lowering of labour standards. However, the reception is a bit cooler to the immigrants than it was before.
