Community counselling is a demanding process that needs to be approached from all possible angles to prevent the relapse of the clients. To ensure success, the community counsellors require support from both governmental and non-governmental bodies to help them enhance human development and fight environmental barriers. For example, in a case where a female client faces sexism at the workplace that prevents her from getting a promotion, the community counsellor can request for assistance from career development agencies that will help fight for her rights. When choosing the source of support, the community counsellors should ensure that it is easily accessible whenever its services are needed; a good example is a neighbourhood church. A church forms the right meeting place for community activities that facilitate human development and a location where the probation meetings occur. In such an arrangement, community counsellors should lead the members in making crucial decisions concerning society. Members of the community will only turn up if the counsellor can assure them that through their participation, the society will yield positive results. If by the end of it all people see the benefits the society gains from attending the meetings, the turnout will undoubtedly increase. Agencies play essential roles in helping the local population; they offer improved mental health care access for the underprivileged. They provide services at an affordable rate than most other options and also offer comprehensive medical care to members of the community. The mental health centre agencies are obligated to provide counselling intervention to enable people to cope with troubles in their lives. Mental health counsellors working with these institutions should strive to identify and build on the client’s strengths to prevent relapse that may require hospital admission. Community members determine the success of efforts offered by the mental health agencies; however, the leadership skills exhibited by the mental health practitioners can bring about changes in the society that ensure continuous human development.
When mental health agencies offer services to the community, the community counsellors should act as advocates for their clients. They should recommend jobs for the jobless, education for the needy and rehabilitation for the drug users. If such needs are not catered for then, the mental health treatment process will be futile due to the lack of coping mechanisms. For example, even when a drug addict attends all the required treatment forums but is not given a job that he or she can depend on, there is a high likelihood of relapse after the counselling is over. Therefore, community counsellors should enhance their efforts by collaborating with as many agencies as possible, especially the career development agencies that will provide career opportunities to the mental health groups. Community counselling can be implemented in several settings based on the needs of an area. When the government and non-governmental organizations are coming up with community-based programs such as parental education, they should consider introducing services such as community counselling to improve human development. The community-based programs cannot be successful when members of society are suffering from mental health problems; therefore, community counselling should be given priority even before the commencement of such programs. To ensure human development community counsellors should continually advocate for their clients’ mental health needs and also champion policies that positively affect society.
