The reason behind Kant’s argument is that a will is only useful if it intends to provide suitable for several people at the end. Regardless of its nature that they look friendly, the ultimate measure of the action is its intention and what it seeks to attain at the end. Even though they will aim at achieving good results, if it fails to achieve them, then its efforts are null and do not count in any way. Kant thus says that the right products at the end are what will justify the suitable actions. Some actions can receive disregard and ignorance, but if their intention was right, they will still shine at the end and attract the necessary attention. The fruitfulness or usefulness of an action cannot subtract or add anything to it. Thus, the story will just remain worthy or not worthy regardless of the occurrences that may happen. The usefulness of a will always remain intact. Human beings only need to create an environment that will enable it to thrive besides attracting the attention of the people who are not experts. According to Kant, one should not recommend a will to experts or even determine its worth. Kant proposes that a choice is the only thing that defines the intention of an individual. Sometimes the will can be useful but fail to bring good outcomes due to some challenges in the course of action. The theory proposes that it is only the goodwill that has no limitation.
Mill would respond to this claim by arguing that many issues in the world have no limitations. He says that a will can be good but the means of achieving it be dubious. According to Mill, both the choice and actions need to be good. While Kant states that a will may not come to pass, Mill says that an effort should be fulfilled and be beneficial for it to count. While Kant does not consider the number of people who benefit from the action, Mill articulates that an effort should be human enough for it to matter. The utilitarianism theory that Mill puts forth advocates for happiness while Kant anchors his argument on the motive behind an action. While Kant seeks approval and attention of the people who are not experts, Mill’s ultimate goal is to make individuals happy regardless of the attention action will receive.
