For decades designers have developed various costumes that best suits different characters and occasions in which we are involved in (Arnold, 1998). Some of the designs are meant for unique groups or gathering such as weddings, possessions, and events. At some point in my life, I was mistaken to be a member of a wedding steering committee simply because I was wearing the same t-shirt label as the committee members. My response to this situation was purely based on instinct. I was shocked at the beginning of the incident but later gathered my courage and had a formal introduction with the committee members. I assured them that I’m not a member of the team, only that we share the t-shirt label that we wore on that particular day. This explanation was convincing, and all the misunderstanding was settled. The experience was crucial for my life since it opened my eyes to identify the clothes I should be wearing whenever I go out or walk across the streets.
It is very critical that people choose their clothes very wisely lest they be mistaken to be a member of a group or be mistakenly identified as a member of a particular race or religion. From this point onwards, I have been very keen on what people were in the streets and try to find ways to associate people in the streets together if they have a similar cloth style. The experience did change my position on the social impact of the apparel choice that I wear. For instance, I dress up based on the day’s occasion and change clothes as soon as I’m out for another event occasion. The incident has indeed helped me to associate myself with one particular group and be associated with a particular group of people. These changes have been significant in my life, and I prefer to keep them going to void confusion and chaos in the streets.
Humans are very social creatures by nature. We interact a lot with each other, thus promotes cohesion and understanding in society. However, it is critical to note that the mode of dressing has been a serious issue for generations. Many people have suffered prejudices in their workplaces, public places, or private gatherings due to the clothes they are wearing. These prejudices have been occasion by the clothing styles of the recipients, which are often unique to a particular group. The incident helped me understand the concept of diversity in society and that people appreciate various concepts, especially clothing in their lives. From this experience, I can understand the fact that clothing is essential for people since it helps in depicting identity, religion, and social stature for us in society. It is essential to note that clothing plays a significant part in our lives, especially about our identity. Most Muslim women are often prejudiced based on the hijab, which they were on their heads while Jews are easily identified by their unique cap while the Roman Catholics are known for their white robes. All these forms of clothing have been used to reflect the religion and faith these people profess.
