Research hypothesis

My research hypothesis designates that the use of social media interaction has led to a decline in students’ academic performance.

Research method

I decided on the quantitative research method of using questionnaires because I was determined to collect richer first-hand information. Even though it took a lot of time designing the questionnaires, getting the target population, and conducting the process, the information I gathered was worth all the work I did.

My sample population was the parents and teachers of the students. From the sample population, I aimed to gather information on their opinions, attitudes, knowledge, experiences, and feelings towards their children’s and students’ use of social media regarding theirregardingrmance. I figured the students’ performance under parents’ and teachers’ supervision and without charge.

I managed to issue out the questionnaire handouts to a group of parents and teachers both physically and online via their mails. I gave them some time to answer them before taking them back for analysis. Since I knew I needed in-depth information from my sample population, I decided to design my questions in a closed-end with a Likert scale. I developed the questionnaires where I introduced myself and explained the research’s aim based on the data they give. I then devised my questions in a way that enabled my sample population to answer my research question. I had a sequence of items that I grouped in themes to enable my sample population to move back and forth from the problems quickly. I also made sure that my questions were simple and straightforward.

I first consulted the sample population on ethical issues to know if they were comfortable with answering the questions. I also assured them of confidentiality on the data they were to give and that they were not supposed to provide their details with the data such as names and residential addresses. I collected data from the sample population and analyzed them.

I employed the ordinal scale to measure the variables indicating that students’ performance declined with an increase in the amount of time they spent on social media interaction without supervision. To measure my variables, I used an ordinal level of measurement. I determined that the students who spent more hours on social media interaction without charge from parents performed more impoverished than those who spent time on social media under their parents’ supervision. Moreover, the students who spent more time on social media interaction were poor communicators outside their phones. They had poorer listening and communication skills compared to the students who spent less time on their phones. This also affected their language and physical interaction with their fellow students due to imitating influential people from social media. Another analysis indicated that the students in schools where teachers had banned social media interaction within the school premises performed better than those in schools with no social media interaction restriction. The students who relied on social media resources for academic learning rather than the school library performed more impoverished than those who spent time reading and researching from the library.

The conclusion from my research analysis shows that although social media interactions have some merits for students, they need constant supervision and restriction from their parents and teachers to have good performance records.
