Job Description

The Med-win Cares hospital is looking to hire a professional medical coder to assign accurate medical coding describing the service received by a patient in the health facility. He or she should ensure that the medical codes are used correctly during a patient’s billing process. It includes assigning the correct codes, retrieving the documented information, and creating claims for insurance payments.

Duties and responsibilities

The medical coder should:

  • Sequence and assign codes for all services received by patients
  • Conduct coding audits to make sure all the documentation are precise and accurate
  • Work with the billing department to make sure all bills are accurate and timely
  • Provide statistical data to other departments for research and analysis
  • Correct coding disputes and errors encountered with insurance companies

Required Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in medical coding
  • College certification before the hire date
  • Outstanding 10-key typing accuracy and speed
  • Excellent skills in mathematics and statistics
  • High level of good customer service
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 procedures and codes

  • Medical Insurance- the hospital offers managed care health insurance, also referred to as HMO, which covers costs for dental and optical care, surgeon and physician fees, drugs, and hospital room.
  • Life Insurance- life insurance protects the employee’s family in case of death, and the benefits disbursed in full to the beneficiaries- children or spouses. The hospital offers life insurance to all full-time employees.
  • Sick Leave- this benefit applies to any illness or personal matter. The employee allows at least three days of paid leave per year.
  • Vacation time- the medical coder is allowed an average of ten paid vacation days. It only applies to employees who have worked with the hospital for at least one year.

TRAINING

Coding requires a lot of skills and detail, and the coder should have a foundation in physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology. The hospital offers in-house code training, which lasts at least two weeks to a month. The coder should provide a certification of a completed out of office training from a known institution.
