Racism
Racism and discrimination have been thought to be past practices, but these vices continue to thrive in modern society. Over the years, counter-terrorism strategies have been criticized for their one dimension approach on Muslims who are commonly associated with violent extremism and radicalization. Regardless of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) acknowledgment of the Uyghur people as its citizens, the latter has always been meted with cruelty from the central government authorities. The Uyghurs and other Muslim communities are often considered as radical Islamist threats (Dong 34). The Uyghur people can no longer exercise their cultural practices due to limitations that have been put in place on the extent of their cultural expression.
Most times, the Uyghurs are subjected to torture, arrests, and mysterious disappearances, creating fear among the Uyghurs and Northern Xinjiang population. In response to these discrimination and racist attacks, Uyghurs have held protests to call out the series of human rights abuses. Some of the Uyghurs have demanded a separate state where they can live away from the rest of the population. However, the Chinese repression has attracted the wrath of other radical Islamists (not part of the Uyghur population), further worsening the Uyghur’s relationship with the Chinese authorities.
Worse of it all, Uyghurs and other Muslims have been pushed into concentration camps and others in prisons (Luqiu and Yang 600). The authorities claim that they have been detained there for re-education. This hostility has attracted the international communities’ attention that champion for Human Rights, such as the United Nations, as the individuals are detained without any judicial procedure. The branding of all Uyghurs as criminals and other Muslims identifying persons as terrorists is unethical. The unlawful arrests of Uyghur men have led to increased numbers of both widows and Orphans. It is worrying that Anti-Muslim hostility continues to perpetuate despite the efforts that have been put in place to curb racism and discrimination.
