The Musical Stage
Analyzing from work put in achieving the Swan Lake dance and Night Journey, they are very surprising dances as they both encompass a story. It is one of the most famous Romantic styles. Below are further analyses on various prospects that make up both Swan Lake dance and night dance.
Swan Lake Dance Composition
First, there are three elements of the Swan lake dance that contribute to its unique romantic perspective. In terms of dimension of movement, Swan Lake dance employs pas de deux. Two performing dances, male and female, occupy the stage and dance together. The second element easily identifiable with Swan Lake is Arabesque. Arabesque is a unique symmetrical body angle in which the dances stand with one leg with the other extended at 90 degrees (Wagnon, 2019). Fouette motion is the final unique style employed by the Swan Lake Dance. The style expresses a unique feature of circular whipping motion, where one leg is raised to the side while the other remains rooted to the ground. Swan lake can easily be identified as classical ballet, giving the following two reasons based on the identification made above. First, Swan Lake is created to determine a love story. Any dance that tells a love story can be classified as a romantic ballet (Wang et al.,2019). Secondly, Swan Lake involves royalty costumes. Royal costumes since the age of modernization are always associated with ballets. The choreography used in Swan Lake dance is a perfect form of ballet type of art. The Swan Lake choreography, like most ballet, uses a lot of smooth bends and stretches, mostly referred to as entendre. It also uses an abstract dynamic, and lastly, it employs an en pointe to all the dancers. Swan lake dance uniquely presents a love narrative that ends with a unity of the two people. The choreography’s point of value is three: the movements, the characters, and the unique costumes. Having analyzed the Swing lake dance, below is an analysis of Night Journey.
Night Journey Dance Composition
Night journey can be described using the following unique elements: the location on the stage of the premier performer is set at the far end to give the audience a taste of doom. Secondly, the motions’ tempo is moderate and slow, with a stillness that promotes a horrific scene (Van Camp, 2019). Lastly, the night journey also has elements of pas de deux style of motion where two dancers uniquely dance in common unity and movement. The night journey can be classified as classical ballet. The night journey is considered a classical ballet because the performance tells the classical narrative of Oedipus. Even though it is not romantic, classical history and overall aesthetic make it a ballet. The choreography begins with an en-Ponte to all the dancers (Young, 2017). Apart from an en-pointe, the dynamic is very smooth, with each dancer displaying their ability. Lastly, “Jete” is frequently applied when dancing as one of the unique features. The Night Journey is a perfect example of a Ballet choreography as it exposes a lot of romantic moves. The choreography’s unique points are the psychosexual symbolism, the motif of avoiding runs throughout the dance, and a costume that uses masks covering the faces. Having analyzed Night Journey, below are some differences and similarities between classical ballet and modern dance.
Comparing Classical Ballet to Modern Dance
First, classical ballet and modern dance share aspects like mood, where each introduces both sad and happy mood to the audience. They also share motifs that seek to communicate an essential value to their audience, but they do so differently. Classical ballet prefers romantic communication, while modernism prefer communication through formal aesthetics. With their motifs, both have smooth and perfect moves that bring out the entertainment value required of both. Although they share the mentioned similarities, the two styles have the following differences. First, classical ballet is a traditional dance and choreography style (Chirban & Rowan, 2016). From its traditionality and criticism, a modern dance developed. Classical ballet is known for its aesthetics and rigorous movements that give physical performance through shape, line, and coordination.
On the other hand, contemporary dance depends on a lot of slow movements that target to appeal to the emotions and feelings of their audiences. Classical ballet involves straight lines, straight postures, and known shapes that adhere to classical rules. On the other hand, modern dance has no limitations, with dancers allowed to flex their bodies to whichever directions they feel are unique. Despite the mentioned differences, both forms of arts express emotions and have both societal and entertainment value.
