The Personality Myth

Great post. Thanks for sharing. The personality myth by invisibilia is one of the fascinating episodes I have ever listened to. I agree with you that the marshmallow test is interesting because it sheds light on how human beings shave consistent personalities that help shape their future lives. Although our personalities may remain the same in most cases, I believe personality traits are significantly impacted by the environment we are exposed to and personal experiences. Over the past years, the marshmallow test has gained significant interest because personality traits help shape our future lives. I agree with you that personality is an old thing, but it plays a critical role in influencing our lives directly.

However, marshmallow tests on the personality myth have some loopholes as the discussion seems to imply that our future is in a marshmallow. Another interesting thing with the invisibilia podcast is how different phrases are made to reappear with the sentiment that “you might find it hard to accept that there aren’t any core traits that are permanent and fixed.” I believe the ad is aimed at persuading the impact of marshmallow tests.

I think what Walter Michel counter-arguments on marshmallow tests are based on his research. Walter Michel argues, “The many ways in which people can change what they become and how they think.” I agree with you that the marshmallow study personality test showed some inconsistency. People have diverse personalities defined by specific characteristics such as sociality and extroversion. Walter Michel’s research failed to support the idea that personality is stable. My question is, How much of one′s personality is because that is the core of a person? Thanks.
