Research has indicated that women have a preference in memorizing faces and remember faces better than their male counterparts, mainly because they spend extra time memorizing features unwillingly. Further research has indicated that although there is own-race bias in facial recognition, positive emotion may reduce it. When people are describing other people from a different race, it is common to hear them indicate that they all look the same. People of African descent think that individuals of Asian descent, mostly Chinese and Japanese, have similar faces. The same case applies to white people, who think all Africans look the same. Furthermore, Asians believe white people, especially those from Western Europe and look the same. This shows that people are unable to differentiate between individuals of a different race. They can only distinguish between people of their race. Although the own-race bias is widespread in all races, evidence has suggested that it is pronounced for white people seeing people from minority groups. This bias has societal severe consequences as it may lead to racial profiling. Racial profiling is a severe issue in the United States and may be attributed to own-race bias as white people cannot identify people from other races. The most common thing that a white person may ay in case they witness a crime is that a black or Latino individual did it.

We also found a correlation between preference in memorizing child faces and adult faces. According to the group statistics, teachers had a mean of 0.6976 for child’s faces while non-teachers had a mean of 0.5624. On the other hand, teachers had a standard of 0.7280 for memorizing adult faces while non-teachers had a 0.7200 standard. The paired samples statistics also indicated that the mean of child faces was 0.6300 while that of adult faces was 0.7240. The findings suggest that people are better at memorizing adult faces than they are in memorizing child faces. This is especially evident when the individuals are of a different race. This can be attributed to adult faces having too many details. As we age, our faces tend to become more detailed. For instance, a black person may see two white children and not differentiate between them. If the same children are shown to the black individual when they are adults, they might differentiate between the two, primarily because their faces have evolved and are too detailed. For instance, one of the faces may be bearded, while the other may have a raised chin. The cheekbones may also be different as compared to when they were kids. The research confirms that people are better at memorizing adult faces than child faces.

Further research on preference in memorizing faces needs to be conducted, especially based on older adult faces. As research has indicated, people are better at remembering their age group’s faces than other age groups. The bias occurs because of social-cognitive mechanisms as people tend to socialize with individuals of the same age group. As a result, implicit bias kicks in when they are memorizing faces. This study failed to explain how own-age bias works, and thus there is a need for further research on the matter.
