The first action that showed violence against Maalick was the abnormal reaction he received after converting his religion. He was primarily treated with antipathy by his colleagues, who considered him eccentric. When he greeted his colleagues, they only smiled, laughed at him, and walked away. He was confused since he did not understand what was happening until he reached his office to find the incense packets, strange dolls, and masks. According to Ashe (2017), the change in his co-worker’s behavior at the workplace can be depicted as an act of religious and racial harassment.
Maalick used his experience, expertise, and qualification to apply for the job opening. Moreover, Jenkins had sworn to check his application and provide feedback. Astonishingly, Bartlett was given the job. Maalick realized that Jenkins and Bartlett attended the same church, and because of his religious beliefs, he had missed out. This depicted religious harassment as the selection was based on religious bias rather than merit.
