Another tremendous outstanding feature of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is presence of more than one active volcano in the same park. The Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes join the other three volcanoes to form the islands’ chain in Hawaii. Kohala, Mauna Kea, and Hualālai are found on the northern side of the Volcanoes National Park (“Volcanoes”, 2020).

The Volcanoes National Park forms a representation of the wider physiographic region. Hawaii island got created by a series of volcanoes, with some being in the Park. Example, Kohala, Mauna Kea, and Hualālai found north of the park. These volcanoes act as a representation of how much volcanic activity has affected the region leading to its formation.

The Volcanoes National Park was established on August 1, 1916, to protect its unique cultural, biological, and geological features. Its lava flows can stretch out for many miles on rocky areas that resemble more of the moon than the earth. The huge waves send lava sprays many meters above the ground and along the jagged coastline, with endangered bird species flying across the mountain (“Everything to know about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park”, 2019).

Despite the spectacular views of volcanic activities around Volcanoes National Park, the park faces challenges. When people visit the park they expect to presence of clean air and great views in the park. When Volcanoes National Park is compared to other parks, it has relatively cleaner air. But this is not the case in every part. For example, Kilauea Volcano together with other volcanic features in the park release harmful and noxious gases that can become seriously harmful to human health and the surrounding eco-system (“Park Air Profiles – Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park”, 2019).

The Kilauea volcano almost continuous volcanic eruptions release sulphur dioxide gas which results to air pollution as it is blown down the volcano. Also the sulphur dioxide emitted reacts with oxygen in the air and water to produce acid droplets. Vog which is also formed by the sulphur dioxide is a destruction to crops in the area. Since vogue is solid in nature it oftenly obscures easy visibility (“Park Air Profiles – Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park”, 2019). Other harmfull gases that are released into the air are mercury, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride. The air is also polluted when the volcanoes are erupting, once the hot lava submerges in water it forms a mist known as laze which consist of hydrochloric acid and other harmful contaminants that when inhaled can cause health illnesses (“Park Air Profiles – Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park”, 2019).
