- Given the huge amount of change over time, this is an indication of a major event like a storm. Massive storms such as these usually tend to be hurricanes, and they also happen to occur mostly around the Atlantic Ocean
- Over time, Barrier Islands tend to change as they obtain their shape from the various occurrences such as the direction of the longshore currents, wind and the angle from which that waves tend to occur. As currents move along the mass of land next to a water body, some of the sediments are carried to the side of the water body and end up forming a spit, which is an island connected to the land then later a barrier island. The same currents as they hit the beach of the island determine how sediments will deposit and later build up in the island. In this case, as the wind hit the island, it caused sediments to deposits on either side as per wind direction and therefore allowed water to pass through.
- The changes happening to the region over the three-month period would be the reason for the shift in the sediments. As huge storms occasionally, such as those forming hurricanes, around the barrier island, longshore currents continue to flow and therefore as the sediment shifts, it moves from the beach of the island and tends to move back to join the original mainland.
- Currents play a big role in determining the deposition of sediments around the island. Longshore currents move parallel to the mainland, and so, in this case, the direction of the current is from the north towards the northeast.
Questions
- The area is situated near the equator; therefore, large amounts of change will occur during winter. The weather conditions and the freezing rain during this season make the region more active with storms.
- Longshore currents have been seen to cause a significant change; therefore, high energy waves, brought about by heavy storms during winter, remove the sediments from the island and deposit it in the land, causing the island to decrease in size.
- The region is generally prone to bad weather, so if I were in charge of the area, I would create awareness on how to act in the event a disaster happens and also to constantly be knowledgeable of weather reports to know beforehand that an event is about to happen. As for the natural environment, most of the adverse weather conditions happen as a result of environmental degradation. Therefore it starts by observing environmental conservation measures
